Great review I am very new to pens and learing to write, I am 74 suffered a brain injury and have just started writing again.

A curiously low-qual & odd build. Cheap? Yup it's cheap. A Bic Crystal is cheaply made too but the ball point at the business end of the pen works extremely well. This Bic EasyClic design does not impress. In particular, it doesn't matter if it's a freebie, a ten cent pen or a thousand dollars ... it has to write well. I'll stick with my fountain pens but if I had to go really, really cheaply, I know I can depend on a Bic Crystal to write well. It won't be the sensual experience that is any decent fountain pen including ultra cheapies like a Pilot Metropolitan. Not 10 cents but the pilot is a real pen.

Yeah Mont Blanc is the rolex of pens. What every normal person thinks of when they think of the "Best pen". What really annoys me is that they aren't on the same level as rolex honestly. They should be using more ebonite and lacquer on their meisterstuck series. The pilot custom urushi can be had for 200$ cheaper than a 149 and it has urushi lacquer and a similar if not better nib than the 149.

"the 950 weighs 55 grams ..." Is that un-inked? Inked with a standard length "International" cartridge? or inked with the included converter? I have the 950 Dragon inked with Noodler's "Qin Shi Huang"/"First Emperor", and 950 with boat/ship inked with Noodler's "Warden's Bad Blue Heron." These two pens are dedicated to these inks. The dragon holds high esteem in Chinese Mythology. Presuming the info online is accurate (🙄) many post unification Chinese rulers have used the dragon as part of their seal. I figured the First Emperor ink would be most suitable for this pen. In Asian Mythology (not just Chinese) the Heron holds an important role as the guide of the dearly departed to their next life. Also, in Chinese Mythology, the departed use a boat to cross or travel a river. (not the same river the Greeks and Romans took to the kingdom of Hades ... (which is NOT a place of punishment, BTW) ... or the same river the ancient Egyptians traveled after dying.) The blue also ties in with crossing the water. Bad Blue Heron seemed the most fitting blue, and it contrasts nicely with the Magenta of First Emperor. I "need" an outlast the acid free paper Archival ink that is proof (after it dries) against water, chemical, and UV light attack. Once these two inks dry the don't fade, come off of, or move on the (wood cellulose) paper.

What is the brand of converter that fits in to this pen?

Completely with you on the judging the swab issue! I am so tired of buying great looking inks that perform totally differently from the pen than the swab. It really biases things towards broad or stub nibs. I also have inks bought sight unseen, often on recommendation, that are very ho-hum in a swab but great in a fine or extra fine pen.

That has to be a stenographers nib, I have 5 waterman nibs and none of them flex that much. The prices are starting to get prohibitive though.

I think they are the Cartier Trinity must de Cartier models. There are other variants with colored lacquer barrels, too. I own one of these. I have the exact design pattern on the silver pen, but my pen is entirely in the gold finish.

Is it normal to scratch the urushi lacquer after a while from posting the cap? My 845 custom urushi has a light scratch around yhe barrel from me posting it

I remember the days when you could get the space ag-7 pen for $50, but not anymore. It’s like $75 these days. $100 If you get the titanium one. Just crazy

Going to argue the 823 has a flawed design and subpar materials. Mine cracked, and I'm pulling the nib and putting it into a 743. The body materials compared to the rest of the Custom Line up are flawed and weak. Swapping the body will only result in another cracked body down the line al la TWSBI. Mine cracked at the other end. This is frustrating given the price point. They offered me a free body swap. I turned em down. The crack will just happen again. What's odd is that the clone pens (Wingsung 699, PenBBS, Asvine) don't crack with similar construction.

I love the MB 144 with slip-cap. Would that I could find a nice one for sale. That other slip-cap MB with matte finish looks like a wonderful pen. Wish MB still made that type of pen.

So the cap is metal threads on plastic threads?

I thought all of the vanishing point line had the same gold nibs? Some are just rhodium plated I thought?

Thank you for showing us all of these brown ink samples! I personally only use a glass dip pen when comparing inks, that way I eliminate the variable of trying different nibs (which usually produces different results with the same ink).

Thanks for the review. I’ve had good luck with my Jinhao 85 - like yours the nib is very smooth. The star for me is that ink though. It’s really lovely and it’s calling me.

Is it a good pen for signature purposes. Because it seems to be skipping in horizontal lines (the line under the word flows). My platinum 3776 M is buttersmooth, no skipping issues how quickly you draw the lines, in spite of excellent feedback. Is medium on CU a tad thicker than the platinum 3776 medium?

You’ve been my favourite reviewer, and this review exemplifies why. You’ve showcased a broad range of pens, from every price point, which was very helpful when I was starting out. And the same with ink. Many reviewers give lots of pen stats, etc.. Imho those things aren’t nearly as important as your closeups and commentary, showing how the pen actually writes. Just as you also show exactly what the ink looks on the page. That’s been far more helpful than big coloured swatches, which I’ve learned aren’t very predictive in terms of writing. Finally your comments and observations are always interesting and on point. I really appreciate how you’ve shared your experience with us, and I’ve certainly benefited from it. What Schmidt converter did you use for the starwalker. I have the same pen (but in black metal, not ceramic) and want a compatible converter.

Just picked up the ballpoint version of this beauty at a Los Angeles estate sale. $125, but I see it on eBay for $575, so it seemed worth it. Original packaging for a very nice model. My first Waterman.
